Dr. Alfred Hall, Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Alfred L. Hall, II currently serves as the Chief Academic Officer for Memphis City Schools. Prior to assuming this role, Dr. Hall served as the Director of Professional Development for the district, as well as Director of the Memphis Urban Systemic Program (MUSP), the district’s division for mathematics and science curriculum support and technical assistance. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Memphis Museums Systems, Inc. (the Pink Palace Family of Museums).

A native of Greenwood, MS, Dr. Hall received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Jackson State University. He went on to receive his Master of Science in Natural Science degree from Delta State University and the Ph.D. in Education from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

Before coming to Memphis City Schools, Dr. Hall worked as the Project Director of the Delta Rural Systemic Initiative and Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS.

He has also served as the Assistant Director and Science Education Specialist for the Eisenhower Regional Consortium for Mathematics and Science at AEL (now Edvantia), as well as a program evaluator and project consultant for the Carnegie Academy for Science Education (CASE), part of the Carnegie Institute’s Initiative with the Washington, DC Public School System, and the Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) sponsored by the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He also completed an internship program within the Division of Human Resources Development at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA.

Hall began his career in education as a teacher of biology and physics and assumed his first leadership role as the Site Coordinator for the Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation (MAMP) program and Instructor of Biology at Delta State University in 1994. He worked to provide direct educational support and assistance for minority students majoring in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology at the university.

As a son of two educators in the Mississippi Delta, Hall has always been inspired by the opportunities that are manifested through the process of attaining educational goals and real-world experiences. He continues to work to build appropriate relationships within the district and the Greater Memphis Community to engage all stakeholders to accept responsibility for providing quality educational opportunities and experiences for all students. Only by working together can great strides be made to achieve the results associated with preparing a body of students capable of competing in a global economy and the world of work in the 21st Century.

“In order to lead, one must first be willing to serve. I am grateful for this opportunity to serve the children of Memphis through the work of supporting teachers, administrators, and schools to create the educational environments and opportunities necessary for all children to learn and excel.”

Alfred Hall
